This month's chapter meeting has very interesting topic and one that affects most of us either because we have or know kids that use a computer.

The presentation focuses on the threats and risks when young adults go online. The talk discusses what kids do when they are online such as social networking, media access and downloads and how it is important for parents, guardians, teachers and other adults to understand the threats & risk they are faced with. The risks are often social and legal in nature but even physical safety is a concern. There are also risks that parents need to be aware of such as family and parent privacy, children's online identity etc. The talk also discusses strategies for protecting your kids and your computers, how to monitor usage and the importance of educating kids through the community.

We would like to encourage as many people as possible to attend this session because it is such an important topic to be familiar with. It is a very fast changing area as well and many parents feel overwhelmed by the challenges they face when their kids begin to use the Internet and web resources in the daily lives. As a community of Information Security professionals we are in many ways on the front line of this issue and as a group we can do so much to educate the people we know within our workplace, community and families.

Mel Holstrom, President & CEO
Mr. Holstrom is the Founder, President & CEO of GBprotect, Inc. Mr. Holstrom has held various senior level management positions within the technology industry for over 20 years. Over this time period, Mr. Holstrom was co-founder of Integrated Consulting Solutions, a global systems integrator. He has been focused in the architecture and deployment of global IT managed infrastructures. Mr. Holstrom's résumé also includes serving as lead architect for Microsoft's World Wide Business Partner Network (MSBPN) and lead product architect for Genuity's managed services platforms. Mr. Holstrom attended the University of California, Berkeley where he earned a degree in Telecommunications Engineering.
